Scanners & Decoders

SCANNERS:
Scanners are data capture devices that read the bar code symbols. The scanning device utilized can be either a contact scanner (i.e. wand) or a non-contact scanner (i.e. laser).

wands:
Because of the low purchase price of wands, they are the most popular input devise in libraries. A wand reader is a hand held contact scanner. It requires an operator to contact the tip of the wand onto the bar code and sweep across the symbol smoothly and uniformly. Wand readers provide less successful scan results. This is because the devise is handheld and requires training on scanning technique. Even with training, wands do not scan as successfully as non-contact scanners.

CCD:
A CCD scanner is another hand held device. Unlike the wand reader, the CCD reader does not require a sweeping motion by the operator. The CCD scanner has a wide read head that the operator places in a stationary position over the bar code. The operator then simply presses a button on the scanner handle to activate the scan.

laser:
Laser scanners are non-contact scanners having a range of five to twenty inches. They can be hand held or mounted in a fixed position. Laser scanners offer a great deal of convenience. Hand held laser scanners operate much like CCD scanners and offer the greatest flexibility. Simply hold the scanner within a few inches of the bar code, aim the beam of light at the bar code and pull the trigger on the handle. Some hand held laser scanners can be mounted in a handstand to alternately operate as a mounted scanner. Permanently mounted or fixed laser scanners provide the greatest ease of use. The operator simply places the book under the scanner with the bar code visible to the scanner. The scanner is automatically activated by the placement of the book in the scanning field. The hands free process of mounted scanners eliminates the lifting, using, and putting down of a hand held device. This increases productivity.

DECODERS:
A decoder is a device that interprets the impulses from the scanner and converts them into conventional data.
